Why April 14th?

The World Quantum Day is celebrated on April 14, a reference to 4.14, the rounded first digits of Planck’s constant: 4.135667696×10−15 eV.s = 0,000 000 000 000 004 135667696 electronvolt second, a product of energy and time that is the fundamental constant governing quantum physics. Why is Planck’s constant so important? Did you know it is used to define the kilogram? And, otherwise, how does it affect our lives? These are some of the questions, among many others, that will be addressed by the World Quantum Day activities.

Tensor networks have been foundational tools in our understanding of many-body physics of
one-dimensional systems. In this talk I will discuss efforts to move away from onedimensional
tensor networks towards networks of arbitrary structures. I will discuss how well
established tools from statistical mechanics have propelled recent algorithmic advances and
how these tools have been employed to efficiently simulate recent large scale quantum
computations.

Lithium niobate on Insulator and Beyond:
Overcoming Fabrication Challenges for Integrated and Flat Photonics

Nonlinear and electro-optic devices are present in our daily life with many applications: light sources for microsurgery, green laser pointers, or modulators for telecommunication. Most of them use bulk materials such as glass fibers or high-quality crystals, hardly integrable or scalable. Even the fast developments of thin film lithium niobate face the challenging etching of metal-oxides. Therefore, the quest for a non-centrosymmetric material system, easy to fabricate and to scale up while maintaining its functionality is still ongoing. Here I will present our recent advances in top-down fabrication of lithium niobate devices and bottom-up assemblies of randomly oriented nanocrystals or sol-gel to produce nonlinear classical and quantum signals.

Secure communications in quantum networks

Quantum technologies have the potential to improve in an unprecedented way the security and efficiency of communications in network infrastructures. We discuss the current landscape in quantum communication and cryptography, and focus in particular on recent photonic implementations, using encoding in discrete or continuous properties of light, of central quantum network protocols, enabling secret key distribution, verification of multiparty entanglement and transactions of quantum money, with security guarantees impossible to achieve with only classical resources. We also describe current challenges in this field and our efforts towards the miniaturization of the developed photonic systems, their integration into telecommunication network infrastructures, including with satellite links, as well as the practical demonstration of novel protocols featuring a quantum advantage for a wide range of tasks. These advances enrich the resources and applications of the emerging quantum networks that will play a central role in the context of future global-scale quantum-safe communications.

Free-Electron Quantum Optics

Until recently, work in quantum optics focused on light interacting with bound-electron systems such as atoms, quantum dots, and nonlinear optical crystals. In contrast, free-electron systems enable fundamentally different physical phenomena, as their energy distribution is continuous and not discrete, allowing for tunable transitions and selection rules.

Recent theoretical and experimental breakthroughs involving quantum interactions of free electrons spawned an exciting new field: free-electron quantum optics. We developed a platform for exploring free-electron quantum optics at the nanoscale, based on a laser-driven transmission electron microscope. We used this platform to demonstrate the first coherent interaction of a free electron with a photonic cavity and with the quantum statistics of photons.

These capabilities open new paths toward using free electrons as carriers of quantum information. Free electrons emerge as quantum optical sources for desired photonics states used in fault-tolerant quantum computation and communication such as Schrodinger cat states and Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) states.

Concepts of quantum optics with free electrons also promote new modalities in electron microscopy. We demonstrated the first instance of coherent amplification in electron microscopy. Our vision is to develop a microscope that can image coherence, going beyond conventional imaging of matter to also image the coherent quantum state of matter and probe quantum correlations between individual quantum systems.

Photonic in-memory computing
Conventional computers are organized around a centralized processing architecture, which is well suited to running sequential, procedure-based programs. Such an architecture is inefficient for computational models that are distributed, massively parallel and adaptive, most notably those used for neural networks in artificial intelligence. In these application domains demand for high throughput, low latency and low energy consumption is driving the development of not only new architectures, but also new platforms for information processing.
Photonic circuits are emerging as one promising candidate platform and allow for realizing the underlying computing architectures, which process optical signals in analogy to electronic integrated circuits. Therein electrical connections are replaced with photonic waveguides which guide light to desired locations on chip. Through heterogeneous integration, photonic circuits, which are normally passive in their response, are able to display active functionality and thus provide the means to build neuromorphic systems capable of learning and adaptation. In reconfigurable photonic architectures in-memory computing allows for overcoming separation between memory and central processing unit as a route for designing artificial neural networks, which operate entirely in the optical domain.

Experimental tests of Bell’s inequalities at Institut d’Optique (1980-82): past achievements and future directions

We will review the motivations and history of the experiments that lead to the Nobel Prize in Physics 2022, attributed to Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger. We will then discuss some future perpectives, both on the side of quantum technologies, and on the side of the more philosophical issues that motivated initially these experiments.
