It’s a wrap!

An exciting and fun week is over. We had so many interesting talks by Eduardo Martin-Martinez, Anna Sanpera, Tracy Northup, Gia Dvali, Sougato Bose, Hendrik Ulbricht, Nick Hugget, Chris Overstreet & Ben Elder. Last but not least we had Markus Aspelmeyer give an amazing public talk!

And we had an amazing audience, 150 participants, eager to listen and learn. The lecture hall was cramped up until the last lecture on Friday. Wow.

There were many fantastic discussions, lots of networking. We are happy, exhausted, fulfilled and we promise: We’ll do it again!

Anton Bruckner‘s work has written music history and is renowned far beyond the country‘s borders. Austria is also internationally known for its contributions to quantum physics – not least thanks to the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics. In BruQner these two worlds meet: using a musical interpretation of a so-called “Bell Test”, striking passages from Bruckner‘s Perger Präludium are made audible in a new way.
A sensual symbiosis of music, visuals and modern research is created.

BruQner is one of the first attempts in the world to work musically with genuine quantum mechanics. Entangled photon pairs from lasers will take on the role of a conductor and show the disruptive findings of the second quantum revolution in a performance for the first time. BruQner is completely committed to the festival motto “Tradition, Innovation and Avant-Garde” – marvel with us and hear the future potential in Bruckner‘s music!

With their video installation ‘The Temporal Forest’ the science-arts project SEEC Photography participates in the celebrations of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024.

Can our perspective of time change the way we behave towards our surroundings? What if we were to live hundreds of years like a tree? Or just one of the nanoseconds that are crucial for photosynthesis? Can we use cameras to visualize these timescales?

The Temporal Forest combines the fastest and the slowest photographic techniques to date to open up new perspectives on the environment and to think beyond the traditional human horizon of time. The team behind the Temporal Forest consists of the artists Enar de Dios Rodriguez and Jonathan Keats, as well as the physicists Philipp Haslinger (TU Wien) and Thomas Juffmann (Univ. Wien).

From individual particles of light to superconductors, quantum physics can describe phenomena on a wide array of scales and dimensions with unrivaled precision. However, physicists usually study systems isolated from their environment – a useful fiction, but one that does not dovetail with reality. Under the project title “QNONREC,” Uroš Delić will be using the FWF START Award to investigate how interacting quantum systems behave, opening the door to a new field of research.

While the quantum physics of individual, well-isolated systems is well understood, many-particle systems have puzzled physicists, despite representing the norm in the world outside of physics labs. The project aims to investigate interacting quantum systems by initiating interaction among several suspended nanoparticles, whose behavior can be precisely controlled and read out using lasers and optical resonators.

Uroš Delić is an experimental physicist. After completing degrees in physics and computer science in Belgrade, Serbia, Delić came to the University of Vienna, where he obtained his doctorate with honors in 2019. This was followed by research stays, for example at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA. Today, Delić researches and teaches at the University of Vienna and, as part of the FWF START project, he will become a junior group leader at the Austrian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information Innsbruck.

We are excited that this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to the Austrian quantum physicist Anton Zeilinger (77), Emeritus Professor at the University of Vienna and faculty member of VCQ. This was announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Tuesday, 4 October 2022, in Stockholm. The Nobel Prize was jointly awarded to Zeilinger, the French physicist Alain Aspect and US physicist John F. Clauser for their experiments with entangled photons.

Paper Abstract

Microscopic physical laws are time-symmetric, hence, a priori there exists no preferential temporal direction. However, the second law of thermodynamics allows one to associate the “forward” temporal direction to a positive variation of the total entropy produced in a thermodynamic process, and a negative variation with its “time-reversal” counterpart. This definition of a temporal axis is normally considered to apply in both classical and quantum contexts. Yet, quantum physics admits also superpositions between forward and time-reversal processes, whereby the thermodynamic arrow of time becomes quantum-mechanically undefined. In this work, we demonstrate that a definite thermodynamic time’s arrow can be restored by a quantum measurement of entropy production, which effectively projects such superpositions onto the forward (time-reversal) time-direction when large positive (negative) values are measured. Finally, for small values (of the order of plus or minus one), the amplitudes of forward and time-reversal processes can interfere, giving rise to entropy-production distributions featuring a more or less reversible process than either of the two components individually, or any classical mixture thereof.
