String theory landscapes of vacua point to new consistency conditions that a quantum gravitational system must satisfy. There are only a small number of quantum field theories that satisfy these conditions and all the rest belong to the `Swampland’ which cannot be consistently coupled to gravity. In this talk I review some of these conditions and their implications for cosmology and particle physics.

In this talk I apply consistency conditions of quantum gravity to the dark sector. Motivated by the smallness of the dark energy combined with other experimental data, one is naturally led to a corner of the quantum gravity landscape with one extra mesoscopic dimension in the micron range. Interestingly this also leads to graviton excitations in the 5th dimension as an unavoidable candidate for the dark matter. Moreover, TCC conjecture applied to the late time cosmology motivates specific initial conditions in this scenario, leading to the right abundance of dark matter gravitons and an explanation of the cosmological coincidence problem. I also explain how the cosmological S8 tension gets resolved.

Jörg Schmiedmeyer has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant to investigate principle of emergence in quantum physics.

Jörg Schmiedmayer from the Atominstitut at the TU Wien has been working on experiments that provide new insights into the fundamental properties of the quantum world. ERC Advanced Grant by the European Research Council (ERC) is one of the most highly endowed and prestigious grants in the European research landscape. Prof. Schmiedmayer will investigate principle of emergence in quantum physics. According to this principle, the interaction of many individual parts in a system can give rise to completely new phenomena, i.e. the whole is more than the sum of its parts. This principle is particularly important in quantum physics.

For Jörg Schmiedmayer, this is already the second such grant: he already received an ERC Advanced Grant in 2013.

For more information about the awarded research, please read the article (in German): ERC-Grant für Jörg Schmiedmayer (31.03.2023), TU Wien Website https://www.tuwien.at/phy/ati/news/erc-grant-fuer-joerg-schmiedmayer-1

The European Research Council (ERC) is one of the leading European funding organizations, which focuses on supporting all disciplines of remarkable research. ERC Advanced Grant is awarded to established, leading principal investigator who wants long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, high-risk project.

Getreidemarkt 9 und Gußhausstraße 25-29

Hopes are high that quantum computers will revolutionize conventional computation and data processing. Although they can already perform certain computations faster than conventional computers, more robust solid state quantum systems are needed to solve the problem of quantum error correction and fully exploit the potential of quantum computing. A currently disjunct field are correlated quantum materials. These are designer materials with properties due to quantum effects of strongly interacting electrons. They represent a highly active but particularly complex area of fundamental solid state physics.

The SFB Correlated Quantum Materials & Solid State Quantum Systems (Q-M&S) aims to connect both areas. Concepts and methods developed in the context of quantum information and computation will contribute to a better understanding of correlated quantum materials. For example, “entanglement meters” will be devised to unravel the mystery of the strange metal state. In turn, research will be conducted into how correlated quantum materials can be used for quantum applications. Correlated quantum materials with topological properties for instance could lead to very robust and well-controllable quantum devices in novel hybrid systems.

The 1st Symposium on Correlated Quantum Materials & Solid State Quantum Systems is the kick-off event of the SFB Q-M&S, which is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG). It features keynote and invited talks by speakers from both fields, short presentations of the 10 PIs of the SFB, and flash presentations by some of their team members. There will be ample time for discussion, to engage in fruitful dialogue and build bridges between disciplines.
