VCQ About Tech Transfer

About Technology Transfer

Austria has established a strong research foundation in quantum physics, but the innovative ideas developed by our research community are not as frequently translated into industry, for example through academic spin-offs, as in other countries. As one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe, the VCQ is committed to raising awareness about this issue and promoting a culture shift in Austria, while supporting and facilitating the transfer of knowledge and technology from quantum research to industry. With these initiatives, we aim to enhance global competitiveness, positioning Austria as a leader in the global quantum tech landscape.

Why support technology transfer?

By facilitating the transition of quantum innovations from the lab to the marketplace, we aim to harness the full potential of our research to benefit science, industry, economy, and society at large:

Societal Impact

In the grand scheme, we aim to make a positive impact on society. As researchers, our vision is always to contribute positively to society through our work. However, by taking our ideas out of the lab and transforming them into products, we can deliver more immediate and tangible benefits to society.

Career Opportunities

Technology transfer generates jobs in quantum tech, thus opening up more career opportunities for researchers in our community. While academic positions are very limited and often require relocation, roles in quantum tech offer a research-adjacent but more application-focused work, making them highly appealing to researchers. The availability of such job opportunities can play a crucial role in retaining top talent in Austria, allowing our excellent researchers to continue contributing locally.

Support for Research and Development

By commercializing research, profit can be generated to fund further research and development, thereby positively reinforcing a cycle of innovation.

How does the VCQ support technology transfer?

The VCQ aims to support quantum technology transfer by  fostering an entrepreneurial culture among researchers and providing them with the necessary tools, knowledge, and support:

Education

In collaboration with
Entrepreneurship @ Uni Vienna we are coordinating an educational program to help researchers develop the skills needed for commercial success. Information about the quantum ilab, our pilot education project in the context of quantum technology transfer, can be found here.

Mentoring

We connect quantum researchers with industry experts who can provide feedback on business ideas and share insights into the practical aspects of founding and running a quantum tech company.

Support

Our efforts also include building a strong quantum technology ecosystem through collaboration between academia, industry, technology transfer organizations, incubators, investors, and the government. Such an ecosystem is essential for translating quantum research into impactful, real-world applications and ensuring that innovations achieve their full potential.
