We report the development of a deBroglie atom interferometer where diffraction at standing light waves is the beam splitter mechanism. This interferometer is then the exact mirror image of a three-grating Mach-Zehnder interferometer for light, with the roles for atoms and photons interchanged. The functioning of the interferometer hinges strongly on the question whether or not the splitting by standing light wave diffraction is coherent. Our experimental realization of this interferometer shows that the splitted atomic wave is indeed coherent.
